Christmas Stocking Pattern



Sizing

This pattern is for a decorative stocking in one size only, approximately 15cm wide x 60cm long.

Tension

Stocking Stitch: 32 stitches x 42 rows = 10cm2 on tension 6

Materials

4 ply Acrylic yarn in red and white

Instructions

N.B. The tension numbers and needle position letters given are for Brother machines. Please refer to your manual if you use a different type of machine.

This pattern is for a large Christmas Stocking made on a single bed using a custom punched pattern card.

Main body of Stocking (make 1)

  1. Starting with the carriage on the right and cast on 100 stitches using the weave cast on, on tension 6.
  2. Knit stocking stitch for 80 rows.
  3. Hook each stitch from the hem edge back onto the machine hooks.
  4. Knit stocking stitch for 30 rows.
  5. Set the Punchcard and knit 100 rows in a two-colour Fair Isle pattern.
  6. Lock Punchcard and change carriage setting for normal single colour stocking stitch.

Heel shaping right side:

  1. Put the rightmost 25 needles into work position B and all other needles into hold position E, change the holding cam lever to H and then knit 2 rows.
  2. Put the 2 leftmost working needles into hold position E and then knit 2 rows.
  3. Repeat the previous step 4 more times (10 rows in total).
  4. Put the 2 leftmost working needles into hold position E and decrease 1 stitch at the right and then knit 2 rows.
  5. Repeat the previous step 3 more times (8 rows in total).
  6. Put the 2 rightmost hold needles into work position D and increase 1 stitch at the right, then knit 2 rows. 
  7. Repeat the previous step 3 more times (8 rows in total).
  8. Put the 2 rightmost hold needles into work position D and then knit 2 rows.
  9. Repeat the previous step 4 more times (10 rows in total).

Heel shaping left side:

  1. Put the leftmost 25 needles into work position B and bring carriage from the right to the left.
  2. Put the 2 rightmost working needles into hold position E and then knit 2 rows.
  3. Repeat the previous step 4 more times (10 rows in total).
  4. Put the 2 rightmost working needles into hold position E and decrease 1 stitch at the left and then knit 2 rows.
  5. Repeat the previous step 3 more times (8 rows in total).
  6. Put the 2 leftmost hold needles into work position D and increase 1 stitch at the left, then knit 2 rows.
  7. Repeat the previous step 3 more times (8 rows in total).
  8. Put the 2 leftmost hold needles into work position D and then knit 2 rows.
  9. Repeat the previous step 4 more times (10 rows in total).

Reset Punchcard and knit 61 rows in a two-colour Fair Isle pattern.

Shape toe:

  1. Lock Punchcard and change carriage setting for normal single colour stocking stitch.
  2. Make a mark on the needle bed to highlight the 25th needle from the centre on both sides. Decrease 2 stitches at this point then knit 2 rows.
  3. Move the needlebed marks 1 needle closer to the centre, decrease 2 stitches at this point then knit 2 rows.
  4. Repeat the previous step 3 more times (10 rows in total).
  5. Move the needlebed marks 2 needles closer to the centre, decrease 2 stitches at the centre, decrease 2 stitches at the needlebed marks and decrease 1 stitch at each end, then knit 2 rows.
  6. Repeat the previous step 4 more times (10 rows in total).
  7. Move the needlebed marks 3 needles closer to the centre, decrease 4 stitches at the centre, decrease 2 stitches at the needlebed marks and decrease 2 stitches at each end, then knit 2 rows.
  8. Repeat the previous step 1 more time (4 rows in total).
  9. Break off the yarn and use a tapestry needle to pick up the remaining stitches then remove the work from the machine.

Hanging loop (make 1)

  1. Starting with the carriage on the right and cast on 10 stitches using the weave cast on, on tension 6.
  2. Knit stocking stitch for 80 rows.
  3. Break off the yarn and use a tapestry needle to pick up the remaining stitches then remove the work from the machine.

Making up


  1. Fold stocking in half and sew the two edges together including both layers of the stocking cuff.
  2. Attach both ends of hanging loop to the point where the cuff folds over on the side seam.
